Judges 6-8

Passage: Read Judges 6-8

Introduction: "Again the Israelites did evil in the eyes of the Lord" (6:1). The apostasy of the Israelites led to oppression by the Midianites. The story falls into the theme of Judges, but this time the oppression seems to deepen in intensity as Israel cries out again to the Lord. The man God chooses to save Israel, Gideon, appears to be an unlikely choice. Gideon is from Manasseh, the weakest clan, and he is the least in his family. Gideon's faith and courage are lacking and he is a reflection of a whole nation that is without hope. As the story of Gideon unfolds, we see a repeated occurrence in God's word: God taking an ordinary, weak person and shaping their faith to accomplish His work for His glory.

Chapter 6

1. (6:1-6) For Israel, God's chastening came in the form of oppression by the Midianites (v2). Why does God discipline His children? (See Hebrews 12:5-11).

2. (6:11-16) What do we learn about Gideon? How does God manifest His sovereign power in the midst of human weakness?

3. (6:17-24) Gideon needs to be sure of God's voice? Do you think he is unreasonable in this request?

4. (6:25-32) Why was it important for Gideon to destroy the altar of Baal?

5. (6:33-40) The Spirit of the Lord was upon Gideon. He had the angel visit, confirmed by the fire, but still he was going through self-doubt. Why?

Chapter 7

6. (7:1-8) Why does God reduce the army? How can self-confidence and pride get in our way of giving God the glory He deserves?

7. (7:9-15) Why does God let Gideon hear the dream and interpretation? What was Gideon's response?

8. (7:16-25) What is the result of the dream?

Chatper 8

9. (8:23) Can we see a change in Gideon by his response to the people's request?
